Religious Translations in Contemporary Visual Art
Résumé
In this study, we illustrate a number of aspects of the multifaceted association between the feminine, the body and translation through two case studies of contemporary art created by women: the installation "Private Rooms" by Ghada Amer and the watercolour "Spiritual Gifts" by Kathy Eppick. We conceptualise translation as including transposition, transfer, adaptation (in the sense of Hutcheon 2006) between media and even genres, and argue that the two artworks are profoundly complementary and that they are vibrant contributions to the ongoing reflection about the role of women in institutionalised religion.
