Jesús Moncada’s work : when writing becomes memory
L’œuvre de Jesús Moncada : quand l’écriture devient mémoire
Résumé
Jesús Moncada (b. Mequinensa, 1941; d. Barcelona, 2005) has published six works of fiction. He
is now considered to be one of the greatest Catalan writers of the democratic era. His originality stems
from his geographical origins and his personal trajectory: his fiction draws on his home town and his own
history. His work is not autobiographical in the normal sense of the word, but, nevertheless, self-writing
underlies the creation of Moncada's microcosm.
The writer's fictional universe is characterised by the coherence of his aesthetic and narrative
project, which is constructed as a 'memorial mirror', whose specificity springs from the attempt to
recuperate, through literature, both an individual and a collective identity.
Beginning with a presentation of the writer's personal and literary trajectory, this study moves on
to analyse the invention of this fictional world. It ends with an exploration of both the process by which
memory is incorporated into the narrative, and the creation of the literary myth of Mequinensa.
These fictional works' relationship with history points to a satirical re-writing of the Francoist
dictatorship. Memory constitutes an essential element in the construction of a mythical space-time, the
most significant theme of these works being the recreation of a collective memory through the filter of
literature. By imitating the processes of remembering, Moncada's work, which fictionalises the voice of
the people, problematises the discourse of oral memory.
